Description
110' Eastern-rigged dragger "Superior", Capt.John A. Dahlmer fishing for redfish on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland circa 1935. "Superior" was built for John Dahlmer by Jacob Story in the famous Story Shipyard in Essex, Ma. in 1932. The whaleback on the bow was added in 1934. It allopwed the crew to work in relative shelter when dragging into the seas as well as improving the vessel's manuverability. She was the first of the Gloucester fleet to have a whaleback; a feature which became very popular.

John Dahlmer, my grandfather brought two boats from Michigan to Gloucester in 1910. He was one of the pioner gillnet fishermen at that port who became known as the Michigan Bears. He owned a number of boats and was a high-liner at gillnetting, seining for mackerel and in the Grand Banks fishery.
---
"Superior" was drafted by the US Navy in 1942 and served on anti-submarine patrol and supplying allied weather stations on the coasts of Newfoundland and Greenland. My uncle, Capt. Ronald Dahlmer was a Chief Boatswains Mate in the Navy and captained her for most of that time. She was returned to the family by the navy in 1946 and sold about 1953. She was sold in 1947, struck a submerged object off Cape Cod and sunk in 1948.
