Description
Arethusa's Last Cruise
--It's 1921 and Sch. Arethusa passing Ten Pound Island as she leaves Gloucester harbor and sets a course for Nassau in the Bahama Islands.
--Arethusa was a famous Gloucester fishing schooner, launched in Essex, Ma. and a perennial high liner in the Gloucester Fleet. She was purchased by Capt.Bill McCoy in 1921 and became the second schooner in his famous rum-running fleet. McCoy purchased her for $15,000 and spent an equal amount having her re-fitted by Gloucester artisons. New masts and rigging, new sails by the Cooney loft, a new larger auxilliary engine and a bowsprit was added to her knockabout rig. Given a fresh coat of gleaming white Henderson-Johnson paint, she is shown headed for her new life as a rum-runner out of Nassau in the Bahama Islands.
